L
n recent years Naples
has gradually become the
Palm Beach of what is
referred to as Florida's
Platinum Coast. Yet less than
a century ago this area was so
isolated it could only be
reached by water.
In those days the land
belonged to the Calusa In-
dians. After the Civil War,
when northerners began to
arrive, they took note of the
fine shell beach and labelled
the lands as townships 49 and
50. The present name was ac-
quired during the period
when northern prospectors
talked of transforming
Florida into a Mediterranean
Italy.
One prospector adversited
the townships as surpassing
the Bay of Naples in grandeur
of view and health-giving pro-
perties. Land lots in Naples,
at that time, were going for
$10 a piece. Today, as one of
the richest communities in
the U.S., Naples houses more
millionaires per capita than
any other town, and its lots
are priced accordingly.
Visitors can recapture the
early days of the town at the
Old Marine Marketplace, at
Tin City, where there is a
complex of shops and
restaurants.
The most famous attraction
of Naples is its 41 miles of
public beaches. Its Del-Nor
Wiggins Pass State Recrea-
tion Area is well known for
beachfront activities, and
gathering shells is one of the
favorite pastimes.
Another Naples attraction
is the rare birds and marine
life at Rookery Bay, with its
mangrove islands. The bay is
reached by a half-mile
boardwalk.
There are several ways one
can explore the Naples area
and its attractions. One can
take a two-mile self-guided
tour along the boardwalk of
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary,
the 11,000 acre wilderness
and wildlife sanctuary of the
National Audobon Society.
Or one can take a half-day
Island Nature Cruise at Port
of the Islands, to view
alligators, manatees, osprey
and heron. These are 14-mile
outings through a variety of
Everglades eco-systems, and
around the Ten Thousand
Islands, to the mouth of the
Gulf of Mexico.
A shorter, narrated cruise,
departing from the Old
Marine Market Place at Tin
City, goes through Naples
Bay, Royal Harbor, Port Royal
and the Gulf of Mexico.
Sunset cruises leave from the
same location daily.
Another attraction in
Naples is its Ritz-Carlton
Hotel, which offers both ac-
commodation and a magnifi-
cent setting for a day or even-
ing visit.
Opened in 1985, this
establishment has already
been the recipient of over one
dozen awards. It has earned
both the Mobile Five-Star and
the AAA Five Diamond
ratings. Situated on 20 acres,
this hostelery is a showplace
both indoors and out. The
Mediterranean architecture,
flowered courtyards and
English rose garden are com-
plemented by the indoor
splendor of an art and anti-
que collection and fresh
flower arrangements that
greet guests at every turn.
Among the hotel's facilities
are an executive fitness
center, an 18-hole golf course,
six tennis courts, windsurfing
and sailiing. Those seeking
an even more exclusive set-
ting in the hotel can find it in
the Ritz-Carlton Club, on the
12th and 14th floors, with its
own private lounge, where
continental breakfast, after-
noon tea, and other treats are
served.
The fitness center is the
perfect place for guests to un-
wind. Its daily programs can
add a new dimension to one's
lifestyle. Scheduled daily are
Ritzercise (exercises and
fitness), stretch and flex,
weight training, an adult ten-
nis clinic, a sailing clinic,
aerobics and other fitness
activities.
The spacious grounds and
many facilities make the Ritz-
Carlton a convenient place for
family visits. Aside from
babysitting services, there are
activities for children
scheduled every day. The Tiny
'Ibt programs have story tell-
ing, games and crafts plann-
ed. Parents are included in
such programs as family
sandsculpture making, and
family bingo. -
There is a children's movie
night, with specially selected
films. The Children's Bike
Hike is a supervised bike ex-
cursion around the Pelican
Bay area. The Junior Tennis
Clinic is for youngsters 6 to
15.
The fitness center's exercise
videotapes and complimen-
tary bicycle use, along with a
biking and jogging map for
exploring Naples, can be used
