Improper lifting is another
cause of back injuries.
Workers aren't taught the cor-
rect way to lift. Don't bend
over at the waist and keep
your legs straight. Do the op-
posite — keep your back
straight and bend your legs. If
you don't, eventually your
back will give out.
Of course, there's more to
coping with stress on the lob
than getting up and moving
around — although that's
often the first place to start.
Sometimes, entirely new cop-
ing skills must be developed.
Some experts teach stress
management classes. They
take a holistic approach, help-
ing people cope with stress
through nutrition, emotional
release, time management
and exercise.
A major cause of stress in
the workplace today is change
— so many changes, big and
little, that people don't have
time to adjust.
Experts advise workers to
pay attention to the physical
and behavioral symptoms that
indicate stress overload, from
the simple ones, such as swea-
ty palms, stiff back and upset
stomach, to the more serious,
such as hives, ongoing
stomach distress and any
changes in sleeping or eating
patterns.
Recognizing stress may be
the first step in coping with it
but experts find that many
people who complain about
stress often don't do anything
about it. Exercise; even if just
walking a mile a day, will help
keep your stress response
even. Sometimes that's all you
need.
If more is needed, Prevention
Magazine also suggests exer-
cise, particularly walking, as
well as laughing, listening to
music, talking with a confi-
dant, taking a warm bath,
and deep breathing. These
"natural tranquilizers" can
help defuse your tension in a
healthy way.
Learning to cope with stress
is more than just a way of
gaining control over our day-
to-day life. It can also be a way
of controlling our long-term
health.
According to Jeffrey Johnson,
Ph.D., assistant professor in
The Johns Hopkins Schools of
Public Health and of Medi-
cine, in the short term, stress
can deplete our immune sys-
tem so that we're more sus-
ceptible to colds and flus.
In the long term, Johnson
continues, current researcll,in-
dicates that prolonged stress
can gradually increase our
blood pressure and our choles-
terol, leading to premature
atherosclerosis (hardening of
the arteries) and heart
attacks.
