arrived to audition — five in-
ches taller and 20 pounds
thinner than the boy in the
Highland commercial.
Sipher then stuck to
theater, acting in the Jewish
Community Center's family
theater --plays, and choir,
singing at Temple Israel
where he was junior cantor
for several years.
As a student at Southfield-
Lathrup High School, Sipher
wrote his first one-act play,
Soap Suds. Before he
graduated in 1987 with high
honors from the University
of Michigan, earning a
degree in theater and music
composition, he wrote a cou-
ple of one-acts, a full-length
play and two musicals.
"My first week in college, I
started on Cinderelli, based
on the Cinderella fairy tale,
but Elli was a feminist and
her prince was William All-
American Student Prince,
the WASP, and the Fairy
Godmother was an Avon
sales representative,"
Sipher said.
Sipher, who was accepted
to medical school right out of
high school through Inteflex,
an integrated pre-
medical/medical program at
U-M, planned on becoming a
pediatrician and writing
plays on the side. But in
1985, he took a leave of
absence from college to write

New York.
"I don't believe in regrets.
I never want to say, 'Wow, if
only I had done that.' So, I
decided I would just give
myself a shot at trying to
write; I loved musical
theater.
"When I went to New York
that summer, I was living in
this hovel up ,near Harlem. I
worked as a waiter and
wanted to see if I could real-
ly make it as a starving
writer. I just wanted to make
things the worst they could
actually be. So, I lived on $4
a day, $2 for the subway and
$2 for food, and I'd save
enough money so that every
Sunday I could go to a
theatrical matinee."
It was invigorating for
Sipher, who lost 40 pounds
and got very sick. However,
he contacted a string of
playwrights, including Bur-
ton (Finian's Rainbow) Lane
and Arthur (Nine) Kopit.
They both liked Sipher's
music.
"When Lane said he en-
joyed my work, I left his
place beaming from ear to
ear," Sipher said. "I couldn't
wipe the smile off no matter
how hard I tried, and that
really convinced me I was
doing something right."
When Sipher returned to
