Discussion For Soviets Slated Machon Mbrah, the Jewish Learning Network of Michigan, will hold a pro- gram for newly arrived young Soviet couples. Slides To Show Jewish History Aish HaTorah/Aleynu presents "This History of the Jews of Detroit." The program conists of a narrated slide show by creater Irwin Cohen. It starts with the earliest years of Jewish traders com- ing to the first settlements and how a permanent com- munity was established. It will include a number of the older Jewish families and the Jewish involvement in the Civil War. The "History of the Jews of Detroit" is a two part series. I LOCAL NEWS CHAIM Sponsors Writing Contest CHAIM, Children of Holocaust — survivors Association in Michigan, will sponsor the annual Holocaust Education Writing Competi- tion. High schools in Oakland County and Detroit will be in- vited to participate. The topic is "Why should students learn about the Holocaust? How can this lear- ning experience be applied to life today?" All entries must be postmarked by March 23, 1990. Prizes to be awarded are: first place — $100; second place — $50; third place — $25. All participants will receive a certificate from CHAIM acknowledging their par- ticipation in the writing com- petition. First, second and third place winners will receive their awards by May 2.
