bility, called a friend, and ar-
ranged a three-way phone
call, all before she had even
signed up for the service,"
he remembers. The couple is
now dating, he says,
boasting like a proud father.
According to Rubenstein,
the dateline was an im-
mediate success, receiving
"thousands of calls" in the
first month of operation
alone.
Rubenstein plans to ex-
pand JIN in several differ-
ent directions. Since he finds
that "people are limited by
voice ads, "he hopes to start
a written singles bulletin in
the future. The weekly pub-
lication will be patterned af-
ter the Singles Dateline; it
will only charge for a sub-
scription and advertise-
ments will be free.
In addition to telephone
and print media, Rubenstein

computer world. The am-
bitious rabbi has plans to es-
tablish a computer network
for Jews interested in com-
municating with other Jews.
The network will consist of
forums for discussion on
Jewish subjects and a bulle-
tin board for singles, which
will probably be a computer
version of the written publi-
cation. Singles will be able to
find a prospective date and
communicate with him or
her directly through the
computer.
Rubenstein will also in-
clude a computer discussion
forum for teenagers. This
forum will allow teens to
meet others in a controlled
setting. A moderator will
monitor the conversations
to eliminate the profane lan-
guage that exists on other
computer talk networks.
Rubenstein has made JIN
his life. He has spent much
time and money establishing
the network. Although in
the long run the network
may end up not making any
money, he says that he will
continue to operate it, moti-
vated by the successes it has
already achieved. Rubens-
tein relates the story of a
Jacksonville, Fl., man who
saw the ad for JIN in the
Wall Street Journal. He
hadn't had any contact with
Judaism in the past 30
years, and decided to call the
network's inspirational
messages. As a result, he
decided to continue learning
about Judaism, Rubenstein
says.
"Even for one person it's
worth it, — Rubenstein
says.
