"Tell me," he adds with a smirk, "Gary Coleman didn't have one black relative he could stay with?" Coleman starred in "Diff'rent Strokes," a hit television comedy about two orphaned black youngsters adopted by a rich white man. On "Dads," Reiser's character, Michael Taylor, seems tailor-made for Reiser's rib-tickling ripostes. Yet, Taylor also seems more of a starched shirt than the real off-the-cuff comic who plays him. "We're trying to loosen Michael up. It used to be he'd wake up in the morning with his suit and tie already on" quips Reiser. Reiser prefers to think of Taylor as "not uptight, but less spontaneous" than the show's other dad, played by Greg Evigan. Playing a father — Reiser, recently married, has no children in real life although, he says, he is dad to a dog — has been an edu- cation. "The line in the pilot (first show) that sold me on the script,"he remembers, "had me saying, 'When did I grow my father's finger?"' In that scene, Taylor, with pointed finger, hands his daughter some fatherly ad- vice. "I hear a lot of my own father's rhythm coming out" in his father-to-daughter dialogue, says Reiser. Indeed, Reiser's real-life relationship with his own dad seems to come into play in the "Dad" star's reel life. Reiser scripted a pilot for a television series about a young man with a passion for writing who winds up working in his father's of- fice. "It was about my fear of inheriting the family busi- ness," he says. "And sudden- ly I thought, what if this series with its office setting goes and becomes a hit after I've spent my whole life not wanting to work in an of- fice?" The pilot didn't fly. But Reiser has his air time filled these days dealing with "Dads." "It's like doing 22 plays a year," he says. Ever playful, Paul Reiser takes note of the Jewish New Year. Imagine, 5750 already. "I don't know about you,"says Reiser, "but I won't be able to stop writing 5749 on all my checks." ❑ . 2 Seatings: 6 p.m, or 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. or 9:30 p.m. Special New Year's Eve Dinners • Veal Maison • Zuppa di Pesce Choice of: • Steak au Poivre • Chicken Rollatini Dinners Include: Appetizer, Soup, Salad, Dessert and Coffee Complimentary Glass of Wine With Early Seating Last Seating Also Includes Live Entertainment and Dancing, Complimentary Glass of Champagne and Party Favors 549-3344 3832 N.
