ly conceived for Shelley
Winters.
"When Shelley, who
couldn't do it, called to say
that I should, I said I couldn't
because Bette and I were
about the same age."
But once Kazan met Midler
she changed her mind. "We're
cut from the same cheese,"
she laughs. "She's witty and
warm with passion and
pathos — all the same things
I appreciate in myself."
So once again Kazan took
on a new challenge and
scored another big hit,
although now she admits she
runs the danger of being
stereotyped in all those
larger-than-life "Jewish
mother" roles.
"Right now I'm going
through a real withdrawal
from all that," she says. "I've
turned down a whole bunch of
stuff. I'm trying to hold out
for that right role now so
that's why I've returned to
singing at the moment. I'll
continue to review any and all
scripts offered to me, but I'll
never give up singing. Sing-
ing is my world and without
it, I self-destruct.
"I'm still being offered good
roles," she continues, "but
they're all in that same genre,
and I want to break another
tradition, another mold. It's
always very hard and takes a
lot of courage to turn down
good roles because you're also
turning down a lot of money
and saying no to some pretty
powerful people. But it's time
to say no. It's time for me to
be seen another way."
Which is one of the reasons
Kazan has returned to the
stage for her one-woman
show, now touring the coun-
try. In her celebration of some
of the most legendary ladies
of our time, Kazan pays
musical tributes to such
giants of song as Judy
Garland, Billie Holiday,
Edith Piaf, Janis Joplin and
more.
Backed by an orchestra
under the direction of ex-
husband Peter Daniels.
"I chose these particular
women because all of them
> are inside of me in a way.
"We are all so many peo-
ple," she concludes. "Some-
times, when we present those
facets as representing
ourselves, the audience can't
accept it. But when we round
it out by saying these are just
bits and pieces of my per-
:, sonality, it somehow becomes
more digestible." ❑
