He remains at a distance; with the passing of time, we repel him still fur- ther. The more we push, the more we contrive to eradicate his existance. The machina- tion of his downfall is our unusual goal, even though our neighbor's contentions were benign. This is the experience the Torah conveys to us about the brethren of Joseph. Before Joseph had the opportunity to inform them that their father Jacob was solicitous about their welfare, the brothers became, as Rashi interprets, "filled with plots and craft." Ibn Ezra gives a similar inter- pretation: "They were think- ing evil thoughts." Their final conclusion and verdict was to slay him. What a beautiful example of how a little understanidng and concern could have prevented great tragedy. It is understanding alone that can dissolve our feelings of hate.
