A

nd they saw him from
afar, and before he
came near unto them,
they conspired against him to
slay him. (Genesis 37:18)
We are all familiar with the
expression "brotherly love."
The theme of this parsha is
"brotherly hate."
Enmity is the deadliest
enemy of man. From the mo-
ment the world was created
by God and He placed two
brothers upon it, seeds of
hatred were planted with
them and the fruit forthcom-
ing was fratricide.
The animosity between
Joseph and his brother stands
not without parallel, for the
entire book of Genesis is
replete with similar accounts
of interfamily conflicts. While
in all other narratives one of
the parties invariably is por-

trayed as a villain, here both
Joseph and his brother are
righteous men. Yet, it is these
very upright sons of Jacob
who find it within their
hearts to do away with one of
their own flesh and blood.
Though each of these
episodes of brotherly hate is
strange, stranger still are our
reactions to them. What
thoughts pass through our
minds as we read these tales
of conflict between brothers?
Philosophers and commen-
tators have wrestled with
many problems presented by
the biblical text, the nature of
God and revelations, the
essence of the heavenly be-
ings, the allegorical meaning
of the account of the Garden
of Eden and the understan-
ding of biblical anthropomor-
phisms and the like.
No philosopher has ever
questioned whether it is
natural for two brothers to
hate each other, to do each
other harm - yes, even to kill
one another and in some
cases over nothing more than
a fleeting set of dreams. We

may safely conclude that man
has learned to consider
hatred as something natural
and innate. We find it quite
plausible and we are unmov-
ed as we hear how 10 brothers
plot to destroy one of their
kind.
Hatred greets us at every
turn; in our individual life,

family life, even among na-
tions. As long as there is a
society composed of people, ir-
respective of their
background or intellectual at-
tainment, there permeates a
suspicious atmosphere that
breeds contempt and hatred.
Therefore, Rabbi Akiva ac-
centuated that one of the car-
dinal principles of the Torah
is to "Love thy neighbor as
thyself." And Hillel,
