If there is a subject that
aging enfant terrible Nor-
man Mailer has not ex-
pounded upon, let it best lay
safely and quietly in its
burrow. Over the years,
Mailer has tackled corporate
culture, the Army, the Ken-
nedys, Gore Vidal,
Hollywood and Marilyn
Monroe. In the current issue
of Esquire, Mailer turns
theologian and offers his vi-
sion of God.
"How can Evil exist side
by side with an all-powerful
God?" he asks. "The pre-
World War Two answer that
we were to exercise our free
will to avoid evil was hardly
satisfying. It intruded on the
unpleasant, but inescapable
suspicion that God was
playwright, director, pro-
ducer and theater critic wat-
ching an enormous and now
odious pageant He had
created ... Once evil took on
the dimensions of the
Holocaust, however, God
was either not all-good or not
all-powerful. The second
alternative seems more
reasonable to me; most cer-
tainly so, if all-good was
altered to all-good-but-
embattled."
"On this last assumption,"
confesses Mailer, "I have
lived, considering all, with a
kind of equanimity."
