Legislators Give Up
On Soldier's Claim
David Rubitsky has ap-
parently come to the end of
the road in his quest for a
Congressional Medal of
Honor for his actions in the
New Guinea jungles during
World War II — a medal that
was allegedly denied
because of anti-Semitism.
And even before Friday's
announcement by the Pen-
tagon disclosing the results
of the two-year investigation
-- termed by one Capitol Hill
staffer "exhaustive to the
point of being ridiculous"—
Abraham Foxman:
Why not public?
several of Rubitsky's key
congressional supporters
were backing off.
The five legislators who
had rallied to Rubitsky's
cause, working through
aides, immediately coor-
dinated statements accep-
ting the Army's findings.
But even before that, the
offices of Rep. Les Aspin, D-
Wis., and Sen. Herbert Kohl,
D-Wis., appeared to be back-
ing off from their strong
positions on Rubitsky's
behalf.
Another wrinkle in the
story was the fact that the
Army released their detailed
findings to the five
legislators — but only on the
condition that they not share
that information with the
press or with advocacy
organizations.
This week, the Anti-
Defamation League is filing
a freedom of information re-
quest to get that data.
"I find it incomprehensible
and astounding that the
Army is not revealing their
findings," said ADL's Abe
Foxman. "If it's such a
strong case, why not make it
public?"
But on Capitol Hill, Rubit-
sky's supporters are calling
it quits.
"We got burned on this,"
said one top aide to a Jewish
legislator. "Initially, we
were very impressed by
Rubitsky's case. But as time
went on, we got the impres-
sion that this was a far more
complex case than we had
imagined."
PACs Won't Support
Hatfield Opponent
Despite the charges that
he intervened on behalf of
the owner of a scandal-
ridden savings and loan
association, Sen. Alan
Cranston, (D-Calif.) has an-
nounced that he will seek re-
election. In fact, Cranston
has already opened a cam-
paign headquarters — an
unusual action since the
race will not take place until
1992.
But if the veteran
legislator is forced to step
aside, there is growing
speculation that Rep. Mel
Levine, one of Israel's most
outspoken supporters in
Congress, may be ready to
jump into the breach.
Meanwhile, Rep. Ron
Wyden, D-Ore., has decided
not to challenge Sen. Mark
Hatfield, a Republican, after
all. Wyden, a young Jewish
congressman, has spent
months testing the waters
for a possible race against
Hatfield.

Sen. Cranston:
Already running.
The long-time incumbent
has long been a thorn in the
side of many pro-Israel
groups. But pro-Israel polit-
ical action committees — an
essential source of support
for any challenge by Wyden
— responded to his soun-
dings with caution. ❑
