Shafran found as a freelance
TV correspondent.
But the uncertainties of
that line of work, coupled
with her maternal instincts,
forced the 33-year-old jour-
nalist to put her career on
hold earlier this year to plan
for a Detroit wedding next
year.
Shafran, who followed
older brothers Jim and Dick
into the broadcasting busi-
ness, left a job as an award-
winning Flint TV news
reporter to further her ca-
reer as an Israel-based cor-
respondent.
After moving to the Jewish
state in early 1986, the
Southfield High and
Michigan State graduate
worked three days a week for
Cable News Network in
Jerusalem before becoming a
house-sitter there for two
Flint schoolteachers. That
enabled her to work for
Worldwide Television Net-
work (WTN) and a group of
newsgathering agencies that
included Canadian, French,
German and British bureaus.
But freelance field-
producing, as her work is
known, "was either feast or
famine. I sometimes even
turned down jobs, but when
the intifada got slow, so did
my employment," she said.
During the slow times,
Shafran visited family and
friends in the States, return-
ing to Israel when a new
crisis — and new
assignments —arose. The
most recent, she said, was
when the Israelis kidnapped
Sheikh Obeid last summer.
First WTN, then Canadian
television and finally a San
Francisco station hired her.
"It's very lucrative while
you're doing it," she said,
noting she earned almost
$10,000 in 1 1/2 months.

It wasn't the potential
danger of her work that
made her decide to come
back to Detroit. "The five
percent of myself that is a
rational being and wants to
have children realized that
this (freelancing) is not a
secure situation finan-
cially," she said. •

Besides, her family was
asking when she was coming
home to the real world and
Yigal Alalouf, her sabra
boyfriend, decided he didn't
want to be separated from
her. So he followed her to
Detroit and is now studying
accounting while they plan
their May wedding.

Shafran hasn't found any
TV work in Detroit and so
has put her career on hold.
But she "hasn't counted out
the possibility of traveling
somewhere else later." CI
