fficials of Sinai
Hospital and Henry
Ford Health Care
Corp. will talk about form-
ing a medical fund to benefit
the Jewish community as
part of an agreement to
merge business operations,
Sinai President and CEO
Robert Steinberg said this
week.
Sinai and Ford offi-
cials this week signed a
letter of intent, affirming
plans to integrate the finan-
cially strapped Sinai into the
giant Ford health care net-
work of four hospitals, 33
outpatient centers, six 24-
hour emergency facilities
and the Health Alliance
Plan, Michigan's largest
health maintenance
organization.
Sinai operates nine health
care facilities throughout
metropolitan Detroit.
Officials of both health-
care organizations will meet
during the next four months
to discuss details of the
merger, expected to take
place early next summer.
Steinberg said Ford has
agreed that maintenance of
Sinai's Jewish heritage is a
priority. Sinai was built
with grants from the Jewish
community in 1953. Under a
merger, it would continue to
be a member agency of the
Jewish Welfare Federation.
"A merger would enable
Sinai to continue its mission
and demonstrate Jewish
values, culture and com-
mitment to social action,"
Steinberg said.
"We are trying to create a
medical foundation that
would impact the Jewish
community. The money
could be available for the el-
derly and the indigent."
Steinberg said monies
most likely would come from
Sinai funds. He declined to
say whether the funds would
come from the recent
Heritage Ball, the hospital's
first independent fund-
raising effort netting
$400,000 for the hospital's
medical endowment.
"We are still trying to
work out details as to how
much money would go into
the fund, the basis for a
foundation and for what it
would be used," Steinberg
said. "It is a high priority.
We are trying to be good
citizens in the Jewish com-
munity."
In the next four months,

hospital officials will ad-
dress ways of melding
medical staffs which are
compensated in different
manners.
Under the terms of the
agreement, both hospital
systems will remain intact.
Sinai's logo is expected to
remain the same. An addi-
tion stating its affiliation
with Ford is likely, officials
said.
"The hospitals share a
mutual goal to develop a
comprehensive health care
delivery system designed to
make health care more ac-
cessible, more responsive

needs of the people of
southeastern Michigan,"
said Gail Warden, Ford pres-
ident and CEO. "A merger
would allow us to expand
and consolidate services,
complement medical edu-
cation and resesarch pro-
grams and improve access to
health care."
Warden also said the
merger would improve
potential for joint ventures
with Sinai in Oakland Coun-
ty, strengthen referral rela-
tions between physicians af-
filiated with both institu-
tions and strengthen staff-
ing for the Health Alliance
Plan.
Steinberg said the merger
would improve Sinai's access
to patient volume, increase
access to resources to remain
in the forefront of medical
technology and increase the
number of operating beds. ❑
