Marsha Goldfine, who holds
a master's degree in fine art
from Southern Illionis
University, says she became
fascinated with Hebrew
calligraphy after taking a
class near her Maryland
home. Illuminating ketubot
tied in perfectly with her ar-
tistic training and love of
Judaic art. In fact, her first
project was to re-do her and
her husband Alan's ketubah.
Goldfine is not alone in pur-
suing ketubah illumination
as a labor of love. Lynne
Avadenka, who also holds a
master's degree in fine art
from Wayne State University,
is largely self-taught as a
calligrapher. She began mak-
ing ketubot 13 years ago
while working as a youth ad
viser for Shaarey Zedek. 511,
sees ketubah making as her
"chance to beautify the wed-
ding ceremony."
Creating an original work
of art is time consuming and
as a result, expensive. A com-
missioned ketubah can run
anywhere from $300 into the
thousands and take 20 hours
to make.
A second choice for som€
couples if to buy a less costly
limited edition lithogrpah or
print, where a calligrapher
can insert information.
Aside from the fact that in-
creased interest in il-
luminated ketubot is good for
business, artist Waldman
feels the decorative contracts
serve a greater prupose.
"They have to be beautiful
because that's our heritage
and this is what future
generations will see."
