over-influenced by the
Palestinian viewpoint. I con-
fess to being somewhat
puzzled by the eagerness of
some reporters to rely on
Palestinian information
while almost automatically
rejecting Israeli informa-
tion," he said.
"There is a tendency on
the part of the foreign press
to accept the PLO's denials
of any complicity in terrorist
infiltration attempts from
Lebanon. The truth,
however, is that two PLO
factions, George Habash's
Popular Front for the Lib-
eration of Palestine and Naif
Hawatmeh's Democratic
Front, have been largely
responsible for the bulk of
the recent attempts to
penetrate Israeli terroritory
and murder innocent
civilians.
"Both these organizations
accept Arafat's leadership,
have participated in all the
recent PLO meetings and
would therefore be expected
to come under the jurisdic-
tion of the PLO. It hasn't,
however, stopped them from
participating in and attemp-
ting to carry out terrorist
acts.
"The PLO-U.S. dialogue in
Tunis is conducted on the
PLO side by Yassir Abed
Rabbo, second in command
of Hawatmeh's DFLP and,
by definition, a high-ranking
member of an active ter-
rorist organization," Olmert
said.
He acknowledged com-
plaints by journalists that
their queries had sometimes
been mishandled by public
officials who came across as
arrogant. "One of my big-
gest tasks is to explain and
demonstrate to every
governmental department
and body which is in any
way connected to Israel's
image the importance of
supporting and working
with foreign journalists and
providing them with as
much data as possible."
There have been com-
plaints that the Government
Press Office is overtly pro-
Likud, further exacerbating
relations with foreign jour-
nalists. Said Olmert, "The
Government Press Office
represents the policies of the
government of Israel at the
time. It is a part of the prime
minister's office and clearly
represents the policies and
the direction of the prime
minister who is the head of
the government." ❑
