APPEARING NEW YEAR'S EVE out a yarmulka embroidered with the film's title, "Paul Mazursky, the film's direc- tor, gave one to each one of us in the cast." King fingers the skullcap carefully, fondly returning it to the drawer. It is harder to put away his memories of making Memories of Me, last year's release that wound up releasing a mix of pain and happiness for the actor/comedian. The film, about the love- hate relationship between a Jewish father and son, faded quickly from the scene. King's own memories linger yet. "It was a tremendous experience for me," says King. "At times, it was pain- ful, sure, more so that people didn't want to see it." But King saw something in the screenplay that had him eager to play the role of Abe Polin, a coldhearted lout who learns to warm up to his estranged son. For King, the tension bet- ween the two characters hit home. "My oldest son and I are close now," he says, "but it took time." There were so many years, King concedes, when he just wasn't there for his oldest son. (He also has another son and a daughter.) King the father has learned a lesson from the painful past to become one terrific grand- w father, however. "Let me show you some pictures," he says. He paints a vivid picture of his own Williamsburg, N.Y., childhood. "My father used to take care of all the impor- tant things in the world —like choosing a secretary of state, a president — and my mother took care of the home, like looking after the children," says King with a smile. It was, says King, the best of all possible worlds. "My mother was very caring, the daughter of an itinerant rabbi. My father was a so- cialist, a rabble-rouser, an athe-ist." "He was very caring," recalls King. King helped care for his folks during the years. Both died in their 90s last year within weeks of each other — and within yards of each other's hospital rooms. King chuckles at how his father "would do anything to aggravate my mother. I got my sense of humor — very biting — from him." And what did King learn from his mom, a woman who, King recalls, "used to hide her money in shoes because she remembered the The Martin Scot Kosins Trio AT You'll find Bistro 75 conveniently located next door to the Palace, the Silverdome and Meadowbrook.
