to come to terms with the
father's impending death.
The film died quickly at the
box office.
Yet it was a notable effort
for Crystal, whose portrayal
of the son uncovered all of
the character's Jewish
quirks and cadences.
Crystal is back on a Jewish
track again with the HBO
Train special. The program
begins with comic Crystal
depicting a crazy quilt cast
of characters, including his
Aunt Sheila, talking about
the role Russia has played in
their lives. It is "Reds"
redux —with bite.
The show then segues to
Crystal, seen in a cornfield
as he stalks the meaning of
life.
But it is the ghost of

him through his field of fun
with her disembodied admo-
nition, "If you go, take a
jacket."
Bothered by his Bubbie's
insistent whisper- ings "in a
little voice that sounds like
Bea Arthur," Crystal tells
his wife he must go and
rediscover his Jewish roots
in Russia.
What he discovers is a
Russia that has gone
through a major revolution,
far from the home his
grandmother years ago felt
forced to leave for Brooklyn.
Midnight Train to Moscow
is a special filled with caviar
and quips. It is also nicely
sentimental, with a family
reunion of Crystal and some
20 relatives that is
touchingly effective.
The Emmy Award-
winning comedian and co-
host of television's "Comic
Relief ' has always found
comic relief in the cultural
differences between peoples.
With Midnight Train to
Moscow, Crystal plays on
those differences. But,
perhaps more importantly,
he finds the common link
between two longtime
adversaries.
Billy Crystal comes off
looking very much a winner
on board this "Train."
In the words of his Russian
fans, he looks "chudesny."
