the French-speaking Sephar-
dim, part of the influx of im-
migrants who came from
North Africa when Morocco,
Algeria and Tunsia gained in-
dependence from France in
1958.
Each group has a story of
exile, for none survived the
war years here. Yves
Kollender, born in 1939,
found refuge with his fmaily
in the south of France in
1939, and later escaped into
Zurich. His wife Nicole, also
a child then, stayed hidden
under a Christian name in
the south of France until the
war's end.
The pain of those war years
is not entirely gone. Some
Jews of Strasbourg never
cross the border into Ger-
many or buy any German pro-
ducts. Others have less ex-
treme reactions.
"Sure, we drive through
Germany on the way to
Switzerland," says Kollender.
"And we'll stop and have cof-
fee in Germany or buy
gasoline there. But we'd never
plan a two week holiday in
Germany. We just wouldn't
feel comfortable."
He is comfortable in
Strasbourg, where Jews, who
suffered such losses, now feel
integrated and proud of their
identity both as Jews and
French citizens.
"We are French," says
Nicole Kollender," and we feel
very integrated into French
society here. But we also have
very special roots — our
Jewish roots." 0
