create Ohabei Shalom, the
first congregation in Massa-
chusetts. They moved to a
rented house, and then in
1851 built their first
synagogue, a modest two-
story structure on Warren
Street in the South End.
Later they moved to larger
quarters across the street.
Their fourth and present
home is in Brookline. The
synagogue at Beacon and
Kent is a contrast to the sim-
ple building in downtown
Boston. Dedicated in 1928,
this historic landmark is
designed in • Byzantine-
Romanesque style with a
dominating blue-green dome.
Not far away is Temple
Sinai, which offers an ar-
chitectural contrast. This
synagogue, established in
1944, is a stately brick
building with white cupola,
and its restrained colonial
style seems suited to this
New England town.
Brookline is a separate
town, distinct from Boston
through so close that from
Beacon Street, the visitor can
look east and see the
downtown Boston skyscrap-
ers. Founded as the hamlet of
Muddy River in 1630,
Brookline was incorporated
as a town in 1705.
In the 1840s, when Boston
began to annex adjacent com-
munities, Brookline residents
refused. "They were the only
community that kept saying,
`No! Absolutely not!' " says
Weincour. "It was full of
Yankees, real Brahmins who
thought the city was becom-
ing corrupt. They looked
down on Boston as a city of
immigrants and they wanted
no part of it?'
Perhaps it's ironic that to-
day, Brookline is in part
populated by Jews whose
ancestors were once im-
migrants — and also by recent
Jewish immigrants. The most
recent chapter of Brookline's
Jewish history involves the
large influx of Russian Jews
who, like earlier immigrants,
moved from Bostson to
Brookline as they prospered.
Evidence of these Russian
residents is found at
Washington Square, an area
full of Jewish establishments,
including several restaurants
and a gift shop opened by
Russian Jews. But the most
distinctly Jewish shopping
area is on Harvard Street.
The one mile area of Harvard
between Beacon and Com-
monwealth is probably the
most concentrated Jewish
neighborhood in all of New
England.
It begins at Coolidge Cor-
ner, recognized by its striking
Victorian landmark, the
former S.S. Pierce building,
