Butrimantz after the war. He
remained in Kowno, where he
became a civil engineer and
a distinguished authority on
architectural acoustics. Cor-
respondence between him
and his half-sister in Tel Aviv
became sporadic. During the
Stalinist period, he told me
the other day, it was even
dangerous to write to
Palestine. He had a good and
secure job. His wife, Yonina,
was a biologist. He had more
friends among Lithuanian
non-Jews than among Jews,
and some of his friends had
risked their lives to save Jews
during the occupation. He
was not religious. Zion had no
appeal for him.
What made him come now?
There were Lithuanians who
did cooperate with the Nazis
in their bloody business. A
popular announcer on local
television was the daughter of
one such, and Nissan's blood
boiled when he saw her on
the screen, day after day. He
also discovered that an
academic colleague of his,
whom he had helped profes-
sionally, had apparently par-
ticipated in the massacre in
Butrimantz in which Nissan's
mother had died.
Revulsion grew in him, and
after years during which he
had avoided discussion of the
subject with Hadassah, he
decided to join her in Israel.
His integration has been suc-
cessful. More than 50 years
ago, he had studied at the
famous Hebrew Gymnasia in
Vilna and had learned
Hebrew. For 50 years he had
neglected the language, yet
here it has come back to him,
and he speaks it fluently.
And so I have found victims
of the Nazis and new im-
migrants in the Russian
aliyah among my immediate
family. But what about that
name Alpert? The first of the
Devenishky's who went to
America changed their name
to Davis or to Devins. The
girls married and raised
families with names like
Balter, Herschorn, Blumert,
Vigdor, Laderman, Wagner,
Gross, Ratzen, Hillman, etc.
When my father and his
brothers got to Ellis Island,
the immigration clerks found
Devenishky too difficult to
spell, and one of the clerks,
named Albert, offered his
name, which became Alpert.
It's as simple and undramatic
as that, but what a story is
behind it all. And your own
family, dear reader, has no
less an exciting and in-
teresting tale to tell. ❑
