A giant repair shop, with cages built with the help of volunteers that are 50 times larger than I would have ever imagined, because the birds need huge spaces to really fly better, to get stronger, to im- itate the distances they will need when they go back to their real home. But BPRF isn't just another repair shop for raptors. The secret, if there is one, is that Sigrid seems to not only know everything there needs to be done about taking care of these birds, but she also is a thinker, a creative, insightful person willing to risk things, to try out new approaches, to make breakthroughs. To use the hackneyed phrase she is "on the cutting edge" of this field. I suppose she is a fanatic, but she is a low-key fanatic. She didn't scream once about the injustices of human be- ings towards their environ- ment, nor about the cruelties and stupidities of poisons and shotguns. She knows her stuff, and she is slowly win- ning her battles. All of them apparently destined for some landfill. Leftovers, unsellables, mismatches, a few of them slightly. damaged. Baby-sized shoes, middle- sized shoes, adult-sized shoes, sturdy boots, sandals, thongs, slippers, party shoes, sneakers, every kind im- aginable. Almost every single one of them wearable. Three or four years ago, when Ranya Kelly was 29, she needed a box to mail something to someone. She didn't have one in the house, so she looked in a dumpster in a nearby shopping center. In the dumpster were 500 pairs of shoes. She took them home, started giving them to friends and relatives, and realized there were far too many for her circle of contacts. So she went to a shelter and gave them away. Never having seen real-life poverty before, she was stunned, and deter- mined to continue looking in dumpsters. And she con- tinued to find shoes in the dumpsters, and continued distributing them to places that reach poor and homeless people. When she was caught, the shoestore made sure to shred the shoes before throwing them away. When she called the company, they threatened to have her arrested. She fought the Big Boys, the entire chain of stores, and they gave in, finally. Now she picks up the shoes regularly, sorts them, makes out the appropriate forms which will assure tax benefits for the shoestore, and then distributes to just about every place you can imagine, to all those people who might not have decent shoes becuase they couldn't afford them. Her five-year-old son accom- panies her whenever possible, as he has done since she began this redistribution of _ shoes. She averages 500-1,000 pairs of shoes a month, from only five shoestores. She would go to more stores, but she doesn't have enough volunteers to help her sort and distribute more shoes. She is doing this as a volunteer, of course, taking no salary for the work. Best of all, beyond the philosophizing and the sym- bolism is the very real reali- ty of hundreds and hundreds of people who might not have had decent shoes now have decent shoes. And it's all so simple. Time-consuming, yes, but simple. Many people from around the country have called Ranya to try something in their own cities with their own shoe stores. She welcomes the calls. Call her: 303-431-0904. Try it once, just one trunk- load of shoes and you might very well get hooked. Ranya Kelly, 7736 Hoyt Circle, Arvada, CO 80005, 303431-0904. Russians Get 'Torah Phone' New York (JTA) — A "Torah Phone" in Russian has been initiated by Shorashim, a project of the Agudath Israel of America, to help educate Soviet Jews. The phone program pro- vides Soviet immigrants in the New York area with a free 24-hour phone number on which they can hear, in Russian, a commentary on the weekly Torah portion.
