face are a fragmented
Jewish educational system;
the autonomy of each Jewish
school; and the fact that
Jewish education is, for
most, supplementary.
Many of the teachers and
shlichim agreed that the
trend for the future is family
education.
Following the workshops,
shlichim began to gather in
the halls. Amira Dotan
spoke of Israel's need for
olim from the United States.
"Israel is a country for all
Jews, but some of its citizens
are not there," she said.
Many of those not there
are from Detroit, according
to Chaim Chesler, executive
director of the North
American Aliyah Delega-
tion. About 60 local in-
dividuals, representing some
20 families, have moved to
Israel in the past three
years.
Yefet Ozery, community
shaliach, said another 50
families from the area are
planning to make aliyah in
the coming years.
Chesler said the low aliyah
figures from Detroit are the
result of a "well-organized,
comfortable Jewish com-
munity," along with the an-
ticipated increase in Israel of
Soviet Jewish immigrants,
who are expected to fill
many job positions.
Like Dotan, Chesler ex-
pressed hope that more
American Jews would move
to Israel, even for a year or
two.
"Israel needs to show the
world that it is not just for
refugees," he said. "It is a
place where people willingly
come." ❑
