have changed that radically
since I grew up. We are not
talking about pill-popping,
grass-smoking, gum-chewing,
whiskey-drinking, sex-crazed
tarnished teenaged dropouts.
These are our kids. We are
talking about kids you would
like for friends. If the future
of the United States were in
their hands, we could all sleep
a little better.
The reality is that the best
way for two generations to
get along is at arms length.
Who knows, it may be the
only way. Kids need their own
space. You've got to give
them room to grow. It's easier
on everybody. I was a kid
once. I understand. I've
grown up to be a fine, caring,
sympathetic father. So why
can't I get within two blocks
of the party?
". . . And Dad, would it be
too much trouble if we picked
up Rachel on the way? Her
father was going to drive her,
but he says that if you're
going to drive down any-
way. . ."
"Oka y. "
"Good. And Dad . . . do you
think we could get Nancy
too? It's only a little bit out
of the way and she'll be
waiting outside in front of her
house. Would that be all
right? She will be waiting.
Really. Okay?"
"Ah . okay. And? . . ." I
was beginning to get the feel-

ing that control of the situa-
tion was slipping rapidly
from my grasp.
"That's it. Honest. Just the
two of them. Thanks?'
It's almost okay with me.
That's what parents are for,
to drive countless miles to
help their children, then get
out of the way. If we're not
willing to do it, just because
we want to do it, then — don't
do it.
The kids don't owe us any
special sort of allegiande,
respect and love solely
because we brought them
into the world. That's only
the start. If we can make the
years they spend with us
good and happy years for
everybody, then we all stay
together. I can accept that.
I dropped the three of them
off at an unidentified street
corner that they told me was
the requisite two blocks from
the party. I heard later,
through the inter-parental
spy network, that the corner
was actually considerably fur-
ther from their destination
than they thought. They had
to walk. Ha, ha. Good. That
will teach them to listen to
their parents. ❑
