Rosenthal, along with a record Campaign opening achievement of $20,402,564, highlighted the 1990 Allied Jewish Campaign Opening celebration Wednesday night. Campaign Co-Chairman Paul Borman told the crowd at Adat Shalom Synagogue that the total was an increase of nearly $1.2 million over last year. Detroit's Project Renewal program in Yavne now stands at $2 million. (The 1989 Campaign open- ed one year ago at $19.2 million, and has reached $26.7 million to date.) The Campaign funds more than 60 Jewish institutions in Detroit, overseas and Israel. The opening of the '90 Cam- paign was aided by a record achievement at Super Sunday on Dec. 10. A record total of $1,096,589 was recorded at the conclusion of the annual community-wide phonathon. Comments at the opening by Federation and Campaign leadership pointed to the ar- rival of an expected 750-1,000 Soviet Jews in Detroit and many thousands more in Israel and U.S. cities. Federation President Mark E. Schlussel said that with the help of community organizations and synagogues, the Detroit com- munity is enabling the new Americans to identify as part of the Jewish community. Campaign Co-Chairman Joseph H. Orley compared the challenges we face today with last year. "At the '89 Campaign Opening, we talk- ed about expecting 150 Rus- sian Jews in Detroit by the end of fiscal 1989. A week ago, we welcomed more than 100 new Americans in one week. A few weeks ago, Israel was projecting 100,000 Soviet immigrants over the next three years. Now they an- ticipate 60,000 in the next 12 months!" He added, "Some people doubt we have a crisis on our hands. They should unders- tand that we are rescuing Jewish lives. In many respects, the situation in the Soviet Union is not getting better, it's getting worse .. . We don't know how long the gates will remain open; but while they are, we must help our fellow Jews to get out - no matter where they go." Machon Hosts Miami Boys' Choir Machon L'Thrah, the Jewish Learning Network of Michigan, will hold its Se- cond Annual Chanukah Con- cert, 8:30 p.m., Dec. 23 at Groves High School in Birmingham. Machon will present Yerachmeil Begun and the Miami Boys' Choir. The choir originated with Begun in Miami Beach, Fla.
