I NEWS I CIA Lied About Kurt Waldheim New York (JTA) — A document that has been in the files of the Central Intel- ligence Agency since its in- ception in 1947 indicates that the agency knew that Kurt Waldheim was a Ger- man army intelligence offi- cer during World War II. The document, dated April 26, 1945, was known to exist even as the United States was voting to confirm Waldheim as secretary- general of the United Nations in 1971. The document, said to be an Office of Special Services record of interrogation of a German prisoner, was ob- tained by the World Jewish Congress from government sources in a European coun- try, said WJC Executive Di- rector Elan Steinberg. The prisoner supposedly gave descriptions of German intelligence officers, in- cluding Waldheim. The CIA has denied hav- ing any information that could have prevented Waldheim from being elected U.N. secretary- general, the WJC said.
