"We discuss the relevancy of Mishnah, how it impacts on everyday life. I want people to get information and make decisions from a position of strength." Hilda Borenstein, who works in the personnel department at Federation, tries to attend the Aleynu class each week. An average of 10 administrators and sup- port staff gather weekly, with some regulars and some who come occasionally, she said. The courses have been taught by both Rabbi Tolwin and Rabbi Reuven Drucker of Young Israel of Greenfield. "We all bring lunches and look forward to it," Boren- stein said. "This year, we covered the Five Books of Moses. The rabbi starts with the basic text and we'll go off on a tangent. He likes stu- dent participation and we have input. I've always at- tended adult education, and this is a wonderful opportuni- ty to be able to do it while at work. I enjoy hearing dif- ferent viewpoints. We get peo- ple from all backgrounds." A part-timer at the Federa- tion sessions is Tom Norris, who works at Smith, Hague & Co. in downtown Detroit. Norris, who is now a member of the board of Aleynu/Aish Hatorah, started his relation- ship with the organization by taking a Hebrew crash course at Young Israel of Southfield. He had never gone to Hebrew school, and decided to learn more about his heritage when his wife, Deborah, entered conversion classes at Temple Emanu-El. "We got involved in a home study series;' Norris said. "We thoroughly enjoyed that. It lasted for approximately eight weeks, with 12 to 15 people attending classes in in- dividual homes. Each week we were given sections of the Torah, Talmud or Mishnah to study. We discussed why Jews are who they are, how they fit into society. "I try to attend one or two courses per week;' Norris said. "It's given me a much better appreciation of who I am, how I fit into the overall Jewish picture. I became a live as Jews, be as righteous and honest as we can, a light to other nations, an inspira- tion to ourselves!' "When I met Rabbi Noah Weinberg, it brought home a point which I saw in my own home," the rabbi said. "It is important to become an ac- tivist in scholarship, moral or ethical behavior. My goal in the metro area is for every Jewish adult to spend one hour a week discovering how Judaism is relevant to their lives. I want to turn all the people involved in Aleynu/Aish Hatorah into activists. All Jews should be leaders, and all Jews have to accept responsibility for the survival of the Jewish people. It can be Israel Bonds, Russian Jews — they will find their cause. And each student should come back, and bring a friend. That's our goal." ❑ L. It doesn't matter who you are, only that you have a desire to learn. That is the only criteria they look at." "Aleynu means 'it's up to us, " Rabbi Tolwin said. "It is part of the ancient prayer written by Joshua and taught to the Jewish people when they were about to enter the land of Israel.
