Besides not understanding
the car advertisements,
Goldberg didn't even realize
at that time that there were
different competitive classes
and regulations that
governed the car and driver.
She also learned she would
need a pit crew to prepare
and service the car.
Eventually Goldberg
found a car, which she nam-
ed Delilah, and a c mechanic
IN, who became her mentor and
coach. Finally, she ventured
into amateur racing:
The car she chose demand-
ed more of her than is re-
quired of some racers. "I
chose a small, underpowered
race car in whose class driv-
ing is very competitive. The
quality of the driving is the
issue. I wanted to see how od
good I was rather than test
how good the car itself could
be," she explained.
That first year, she fin-
ished almost last, but that
didn't bother her. "I didn't
know what I was doing and
was much more cautious
than people whod raced mo-
torcycles or thought about
racing all their lives. I was
the only woman with no
11, background and no connec-
tion through a husband or
boyfriend to the sport."

In her second year of rac-
ing, Goldberg finished
seventh in the Northern Pa-
cific division. That was good
enough to qualify for the
sport's national race in
Atlanta, but she decided not
to compete until she feels
she can do o so successfully.
"I found and surpassed my
`terror' boundary. I learned
to push myself past that. If
what I'm doing can set an
example for someone else in
whatever field or other
capacity and encourage
them to take a risk, then it's
worth it."
And what is Goldberg's
limit? She's not sure, but
she's trying to find a sponsor
so she can try making race
car driving a profession. "I
want to take this as far as I
can go," she said. ❑
