reams and dreamers
play a pivotal role in
many major events
throughout the book of
Genesis. Abimelech dreams
(Gen. 20:3); Joseph dreams

whole empire around because
of his mysterious dreams (Ch.
42).

psychoanalytic theory,
dreams are an important
barometer of a man's
character, his goals, values
and aspirations in life. A
great person has sublime and
spiritual dreams; a mundane
person has petty and ordinary
dreams.
Jacob's journey and his
20-year sojourn in Laban's
house present us with a

Laban. By the end of these 20
years, Jacob has become a dif-
ferent man. He is no longer
concerned with just the
necessities of life. His vlaues
have changed and his dreams

micro-cosmic portrayal of a
man whose life was influenc-
ed and shaped by a series of
dreams. The dreams of Jacob
are windows to his soul.

heaven and earth. Upon it,
angels ascend and descend.
He hears the voice of God
summoning him to service
and promising him and his
descendants a blessed destiny
for all times.
Here is-an idealistic young
man who has a spiritual
awakening and finds God. He
asks nothing of God but the
necessities of life, food and
clothes, and he is inspired to
devote his future energies and
resources to His service.
Jacob's first dream reflects
the spiritual yearnings of a
young man eager to connect
heaven with earth. It is a
