In his striving to oust the
Establishment and to attain
such a power for himself,
Lerner attempts to mislead
with a contention that a
young generation of Jews is
arising in the revolt he aims
to organize. He couldn't prove
it. All that is needed is to take
account of the General
Assembly of the Council of
Federations. There were some
3,500 in attendance in Cin-
cinnati from hundreds of com-
munities. They were over-
whelmingly of the new
generation of young
American Jews. Among them
were many critics, of Israeli
Prime Minister Itzhak
Shamir. There was much
criticism and many differing
views. In the main when
there were condemnations
they were of those who con-
tribute toward undermining
Israel's status as a sovereign
state.
There is one result in
Michael Lerner's actions. It is
the manner in which he
misleads the non-Jew. The
method in which he spreads
his venom against the "Israel
Establishment" leads non=
Jews to believe that "Jews
also are in the Palestinian
fold." Lerner has acquired a
major role as the creator of
the prejudice that misleads
into a spreading idea in the
already prejudiced media that
Jews support the anti-Zionist
propaganda, and favor the
establishment of a Palesti-
nian state. He keeps
misleading on that score and
has an unusually big share of
guilt in the biased views
about Jewish support for
Israel.
One can just about imagine
what a Michael Lerner would
do if he acquired "Establish-
ment Power" at a time like
the present when there is
need for a $2 billion fund to
settle 100,000 Russian Jews
in Israel; or how he would act
if and when his recognizably
admired Arafat were to
mobilize another intifada. He
already seeks the language of
Arafatism.
If one wished to be kind to
Lerner, the best that could be
said is that he is "self-
deluded." But this does not
justify an ambition for power
that produces venom and, in
the ultimate result of his
treatment of the most serious
issues of his fellow Jews, also
leads to anti-Semitism. ❑

Authority For
The Ages

alo Baron will be a
name to quote, an
authority to turn to in
the centuries to come.

With Heinrich Graetz and
Simon Dubnow, he is already
in the ranks of the most

Salo Baron

authoritative in Jewish and
world history.
He was the chief authority
on historical data against
Adolf Eichmann in the trial
in Jerusalem. In academia he
was the teacher for the most
eminent in Jewish learning.
The most distinguished in
theological spheres of all
faiths learned from him.
He was an inspiration as
guest teacher and lecturer at
Wayne State University and
at major events of national
movements. We always learn-
ed from him personally as
well as from his voluminous
published works.
There was occasion to see
him in action, to witness the
dedication with which he and
his accomplished wife
Jeanette were assembling the
data that added to the convic-
tion not of Eichmann alone
but of the guilty in the entire
German nation.
The Salo Baron record is
one of such great creativity
that its inerasable status is
among the greatest in the
history. of mankind. To have
been associated with him and
his Jeanette remains among
the great privileges- of a
lifetime. ❑

Foreign Labor
Grows In Israel

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The
number of 'foreign workers
in Israel with the Employ-
ment Service's approval has
jumped 20.1 percent since
the end of last year, despite
calls by Employment Service
officials to cut back on for-
eign workers following the
huge rise in unemployment
over the past 11 months.
According to the service's
latest figures, the number of
foreign workers under per-
mit has now reached 4,444.
In addition, 2,273 South
Lebanese workers regularly
cross the Good Fence to work
and an estimated 10,000 for-
eigners are illegally in Israel.
