an altercation at a Los
Angeles synagogue.
City Attorney James Hahn
accused McCalden of misde-
meanor assault with a dead-
ly weapon, battery, tresspass-
ing, fighting in public and in-
terfering with the civil rights
of others.
The alleged assault and
battery occurred last June,
when McCalden entered the
temple of Congregation
Mogen David during a debate
between Iry Rubin, head of
the Jewish Defense League,
and Yehuda Lev, a liberal col-
umnist for the Jewish Jour-
nal newspaper.
Witnesses said that at one
point in the debate, McCalden
interrupted with anti-Semitic
remarks, then broke some
kaddish lights while being
ejected, and kicked and pun-
ched an elderly congregant.

Israelis Freed
In San Salvador

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Five
Israelis, employees of the
Tahal Water Engineering Co.,
were held captive for several
hours recently by Salvadoran
rebels who occupied part of
the Sheraton Hotel in San
Salvador.
They were released
unharmed when the guer-
rillas realized the Israelis
were not foreign military ad-
visers, according to Hen Har-
paz, Tahal's director for
overseas planninig, who
spoke to the workers by
telephone.
He said they told him they
were well treated by their
youthful captors. They were
to return to their jobs in the
Salvadoran capital after a
week's vacation, Harpaz said.

AFL-CIO
Supports Israel

New York (JTA) — The AFL-
CIO unanimously passed a
strongly worded resolution in
support of the State of Irael,
at its 18th convention held
recently in Washington.
Herb Magidson, president
of the Jewish Labor Commit-
tee, said the resolution was
"the most recent reaffirma-
tion of the labor movement's
bedrock support for the State
of Israel."
Representing over 14
million trade unionists across
the United States, the resolu-
tion states, "The AFL-CIO
has a strong bond with Israel,
a nation built by the trade
union movement. We have an
equally strong bond with
Histadrut," Israel's trades
union federation.
