"Some of the parents have
had such poor experiences in
their own childhood they
didn't have any models to
follow," she said.
The homemaker tries to
ease the stress many parents
feel in the late afternoon and
early evening hours when
children demand the most
attention, Wineman said.
"That's when many of the
accidents or abuses happen."
Another tension reliever
for parents is the annual
three-day trip to camp, she
said. It is the first vacation
some mothers have had in
years.
With the Spillman grant,
which is about $52,000
larger than the grant given
last year, the program can
serve more families and add
more staff, she said.
The program now serves
40 families or about 95 in-
dividuals on a weekly basis.
With the added grant
money, Wineman said, JFS
can expand that to at least
45 families.
JFS can also add another
part-time social worker and
a full-time homemaker to
the program.
Although the program is
only a few years old, families
who have left the program
have benefited from it,
Wineman said.
"We do see a change," she
said. "We do see a difference
in the children. The parents
are softer now and don't feel
so isolated." ❑

have a household item drive
to help Soviet Jews in their
resettlement in Detroit. The
drive will be 10 a.m. to noon
Dec. 10 in Room 329 at the
Maple-Drake Building, and is
sponsored by students of Club

towels, linens, cooking uten-
sils in good condition, small
appliances of all kinds, toys

gress of Secular Jewish
