killer, 17-year-old Jaber
Hawash.
Reporter Victor Nahmias
interviewed the teen-ager,
who proudly admitted to
killing eight so-called col-
laborators, including one of
his own cousins. ,
"I have no regrets about
what I did," he told
Nahmias, "Believe me, I am
happy about it. Our people
have slowly become purified.
One thing is important to us:
that our people be pure, and
that they all follow the
straight and narrow. That's
what we want."
The young pUrist described
how he had axed his cousin,
Umm Barakat: "We went in
and knocked on the door.
She woke up. Of course, we
were masked and wearing
camouflage uniforms. She
came downstairs with us. I
didn't ask her anything un-
til she came down with us. I
took her out to the street, to
the spot where I intended to
kill her. I tied her up, blind-
folded her and smashed her
head in with an axe."
The Israeli forces are much
better organized than in the
first year of the intifada.
And although soldiers and
their officers are reluctant to
say as much, there has been
a marked turnaround since
General Eliahu Mordechai
replaced General Amram
Mitzna six months ago as
head of the Central Com-
mand.
Since mid-November, some
1500 young leaders of the in-
tifada have been arrested in
sweeps in the West Bank.
Earlier, the top 200 leaders
of the radical Hamas
Moslem fundamentalists,
were arrested after several
Hamas gunmen admitted to
the kidnap-murders of two
Israeli soldiers.

constantly say of their ar-
rested leaders, "Their shoes
will be filled by others," the
new leaders are increasingly
identified with the 15-year-
olds who chant "Long Live
Death!" and "purify" elders
who don't agree with that
sentiment.
An Israeli official who
asked not to be identified
said that "mediocre people,
cold-blooded kids and Arafat
opponents are now running
the intifada.
"They understand they
,can't win. They ridicule
Arafat, saying that he does
nothing while they put their
lives on the line. The in-
tifada is not completely over.
It could continue on a low
level for years. But they
know now that they have
lost."

Moscow Yeshiva
Told To Move
New York (JTA) — The
yeshivah established in
Moscow by Israeli Rabbi
Adin Steinsaltz has been
asked to vacate its premises
by the Moscow municipality.
The mayor's office, which
granted Steinsaltz the
building last year, on Nov.
10 gave the yeshivah a week
to vacate. It was not known
if the yeshivah had moved or
-would be moving.
However, the building's
electricity and heating were
turned off Nov. 14, according
to the Student Struggle for
Soviet Jewry.
Rabbi Arthur Schneier,
president of the Appeal of
Conscience Foundation, said
the yeshiva had only been
given the building for a year
and that the order to vacate
was to be expected.
