standing next to the shop.
He is also accused of over-
turning fruit and vegetable
stands on the street and
dumping the produce on the
ground.
Reservist Uri Sharabi told
the court that he was mann-
ing a look-out post on top of a
five-story building overlook-
ing the street in Hebron
where the shooting incident
took place on Sept. 30 last
year.
While Levinger was repor-
ting to soldiers at an army
roadblock that his car had
been stoned, more stones
were hurled at the car and
its windscreen was shat-
tered.
Sharabi said, "I saw Lev-
inger walk forward slowly,
pull out his pistol, load it
and fire two or three shots in
the air, at a 90 degree angle.
Then he turned around and
walked in the other direc-
tion, aimed his pistol at a
horizontal angle and fired
two shots towards the shops
to his right and his left."
During that time, the
witness said, no stones were
being thrown at Levinger.
After that, the witness
said, Levinger smashed
several produce stands,
which touched off a riot.
Levinger has denied the
charges, saying that he fired
to protect members of his
family who were in the car,
and that he did not
deliberately aim his pistol at
anyone.
Kibbutzim Bite
The Bullet
Jerusalem (JPFS) — The
United Kibbutz Movement
has decided to accept a tough
arrangement worked out by
the government and the
banks to rescue them from
crippling financial
difficulties. Some $835
million of the UKM's $3.6
billion debt will now be
written off.
The government is to pay
the banks some $500 million
and will let the banks reduce
their income tax payments
to cover the loss of additional
hundreds of millions. The
banks will then provide
loans, at 4.5 per cent interest
a year, to help the kibbutzim
pay off the remainder over
some 25 years.
In return, the kibbutzim
are to raise some $20
million, sell assets, reduce
their standard of living by 7
percent, and send 11 percent
of their members to work
outside the kibbutzim for 4
years, the UKM's
spokesman said.
