before it's converted into analog,
creating a truer reproduction of the
music.
• 18-bit digital-to-analog con-
verters. Just how much CD perform-
ance actually improves by increas-
ing the samples from the more com-
mon 16 bits to 18 bits is subject to
debate.
• Separate digital and analog
power supplies. Noise and distortion
on the disc are reduced ever so
slightly with this additional feature.
• CD players may unmask your
audio system's inability to handle
the discs' higher highs and lower
lows. Indeed, a CD player cranked to
capacity can damage an older
system.
Speakers made before 1980 are
especially vulnerable if you play
CDs at high volume. If you have an
older system, one way to tell
whether your speakers are straining
is to listen for distortion in the high
notes, advises Changing Times
magazine.
When CD players were introduc-
ed, you were told to power them with
at least a 50-watt-per-channel
amplifier or receiver to handle the
power a player put out. Since then,
makers have redesigned stereo
systems to handle a wider dynamic
range. You'll be safe with anything
made within the past three or four
years down to even 20 watts per
channel.
When is it time to update your CD
player? If you bought one of the
early model players, before more
sophisticated error correction
features were introduced, you might
notice skips or dropouts when you
play your CDs. A newer model
should play your discs with fewer
problems.
