time caring for her mother.
I'd supported her, emotional-
ly, through some pretty tough
times. But this baby thing —
I _ wasn't so sure. •
BefOre I left for our first
face-to-face meeting, I made
up my mind. if Sylvia had to
have this child, it was my du-
ty as her friend to convince
her to put it up for adoption.
In an informal poll, my dorm-
mates agreed. What kind of
life could a 19-year-old single
parent provide, anyway?
As I learned that weekend
in Minnesota, Sylvia wasn't
just any 19-year-old. After we
found each other at the air-
port gate ("You're so. .
short!" was the first thing I
could think to say), we lugged
my bags to her car. She'd
never driven to the airport
before and took a wrong turn
that sent us heading into
Wisconsin. That was funny to
her,and she laughed out loud
at her mistake. Her reac-
tion surprised me; I would've
been cursing and smacking
the dashboard in exaspera-
tion.
That night we went out for
Chinese food. As we fidgeted
in our seats, Sylvia told me
about how she'd been wait-
ressing at that restaurant
when a customer had scrib-
bled on his napkin, "In case
of emergency, call 911. In case
you're interested, call me."
She did. Eight months later,
she had to tell him that she
was pregnant.
A friend of Sylvia's mother
walked -over to our booth to
say hello. "What are you do-
ing these days?" she wanted
to know.
Sylvia's hand instinctively
reached for her still-flat
stomach. "I'm going to have
a baby!"
I felt my stomach knot, and
I tried to disappear into the
vinyl bench. "Be quiet!" I
wanted to shout. "What are
you, crazy? Don't tell
anyone!"
The woman's eyes widened
and she stretched out her
arms and gasped. I held my
breath. "How wonderful!" she
exclaimed. "When are you
due?"
And then I realized what
five advanced-placement
classes and nine months at
college hadn't taught me: it's
all right for two friends with
similar morals to have dif-
ferent priorities. Sylvia didn't
seem scared anymore; she
looked proud. And happy and
excited. The shame that I felt
wasn't hers — it was mine. I
was embarrassed simply
because she wasn't doing
what I would've done.
I never did try to convince
Sylvia to give up her child. In
fact, I went back to Chicago
knowing that I'd even fly
back for the delivery if she
wanted me there.
