cessible shopping, golf courses
and medical centers.
"In clubhouses, bulletin
boards announced events
ranging from Saturday night
dances to lip reading classes
for beginners.
"In places called Leisure
World, mature adults could
enjoy lively companionship
for only $1,000 to $4,500 plus
the maintenance fee of
$92-$127.
"Barbershop quartets sang
out their own lyrics — 'Tint
your hair and keep it curled
and stalk your prey at Leisure
World!
"Retirement communities,
both in town and in warmer
climes, continue to be popular
with swinging grandmas and
grandpas who are part of the
action.
"There may not be singles-
only apartments, and
meeting strangers at a
singles bar has been partly
replaced by companion and
connector ads in the
newspapers. But the young
unmarrieds still manage to
get together.
"Most of the younger love
children of the 1960s are now
Yuppies, many of whom vote
Republican and foster conser-
vative views.
"Haight-Ashbury in San
Francisco and Toronto's hip-
pie section, Yorkville, are
ghosts of a past in which long-
haired people wandered, clad
in denim pants, flowered
shirts, Mexican serapes and
Navajo headbands.
"The love movement reach-
ed its fullest blossom in the
hippie love-ins held during
the summer of 1967.
"An entire generation of
young people found America
and its work ethic and
material success wanting. It
was said that the flower
children took their tactics
from Ghandi, their idealism
from philosophy class and
their money from Daddy.
