plans to return home to
shoot part of the film.
Six months ago, the
Rockefeller Foundation
nominated him for its
Documentary Fellowship.
He will learn next month if
received the grant which he
hopes to use to fund part of
From Homeroom to the Big
House. The film will focus on
the large number of high
school dropouts who end up
in jail.
"The dollars for documen-
tary are decreasing," he
said. "I've received great
support for some of my films,
but for others it comes either
out of my pocket or from in-
kind contributions. With
this kind of work, I'm always
seeking contributions of
goods and services and fun-
ding sources."
Glaser credits his parents,
Detroiters Sid and Elma, as
his inspirations.
"I learned a lot working
for my father, who owned a
small clothing store for
many years. He displayed
such honesty, integrity and
compassion for all of his
customers, no matter who
they were. He taught me
these values with actions not
words. That's where I get the
sense of treating my subjects
with the respect he gave his
customers," Glaser said. His
mother also has a hand in
his business education.
