Public Notice Focusing
On Suicides By Soldiers
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
suicides of two Israel
Defense Forces soldiers in
the past two weeks have
focused public attention on
the rarely publicized
phenomenon of suicide in
the armed services.
Both soldiers belonged to
the crack Givati Brigade.
The family of one of them,
Sgt. Eli Shahar, who shot
himself to death Nov. 18, has
charged that he was harass-
ed by his superior officer and
by soldiers in the ranks.
The family said its private
investigation established
that the soldier's superior
blocked his request to be
admitted to an officers train-
ing course.
Shortly before the suicide,
the soldier was forced to
stand "trial" by a group of
his peers, who wore masks
and accused him of lack of
discipline, the family said.
Israel Radio reported that
Shahar's company com-
mander was relieved of his
duties by order of the com-
manding general in the
southern region.
Nevertheless, military
sources say that only six
suicides in the last 10 years
are alleged to have been
prompted by harassment,
and in only one of those
cases was a causal relation-
ship proven.
The IDF, backed by psy-
chologists, says its suicide
rate is no higher than the

rate for comparable age
groups in other Western
countries.
Official IDF statistics say
an average of 27 soldiers
have committed suicide in
each of the last seven years.
The highest year was 1984,
when 39 soldiers killed
themselves.
The number of suicides has
hovered around 30 in the
last two years. There have
been 24 soldier suicides
since April.
