safer with another adult

Bershad has watched, in
the manner of a parent or a
big brother, as his players
have grown up. He's seen
them want to be like him on
the trips, ordering what he,
the adult, orders. He's loan-
ed them money when
they've needed it. He's tried
to be a good example for
them. And he's also learned
about himself.
"I've got two sides to me.
One is what I call the 'goody-
goody;' the other side is the
grown-up side. Coaching is
being goody-goody with the
kids, being friends with
them. But I've had to realize,
whether I like it or not, that
I'm 47 years old. I've even
had kids tell me, 'God,
you're old. It's hard to be
your friend. You're 47 years
old.' "
But the coach with the
child's heart believes he has
an answer. He says he's been
blessed with a healthy body.
He can still get out on the
court and show the boys he
knows what he's teaching
them. And he plays adult
league basketball, too.
So when the kids tell him
he's too old, he has an an-
swer. "Hopefully," he tells
them, "the ball doesn't
know." El

JCC Basketball
Reunion Feb. 5

A reunion of all Jewish
Community Center varsity
basketball teams who played
under Coach Barry Bershad
since 1963 is scheduled for
Feb. 5 at the Maple-Drake
Center.
"It will be a night of
basketball memories and
coffee," said Bershad, who is
hoping those attending will
bring team rosters,
photographs and other
memorabilia for inclusion in
a permanent record at the
Center. A wall plaque honor-
ing the teams is planned.
The memorabilia are
needed to replace items that
were lost during the
Center's moves, Bershad
said.
Interested persons are
asked to contact Bershad at
350-3292 or Brian Clayton
at the Center, 661-1000, Ext.
239.
