Featured in the evening of cantorial and Chanukah music will be guest cantors Paul Kowarsky of Beth Tzedec Congregation in Toronto and Abraham Lubin of Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago. They will be joined by Cantor Chaim Najman and the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue Choir, directed by Eugene Zweig. Cantor Kowarsky was born in South Africa and has been singing professionally since age nine. He studied with Cantor Shlomo Mandel and attended the Tel Aviv Can- torial Academy. A tenor, Can- tor Kowarsky has sung at pul- pits in South Africa and in the United States. Cantor Lubin was born -in London and received his early musical and religious educa- tion in Israel. At the age of eight, he sang with the Rivlin Choir in Jerusalem. He studied at the Etz Chaim Yeshiva, Jews College Can- torial School, the University of Cincinnati and currently at the University of Chicago, where he is a doctoral can- didate in musicology. Cantor Lubin, a baritone, has sung as a chazzan in synagogues throughout Eng- land and the United States. He is on the faculty of the Spertus College of Judaica and has been designated an honorary fellow of the Can- tors Institute of .the Jewish Theological Seminary. The concert is open to the entire community. There is no charge. Following the even- ing's program, refreshments will be served. The annual Laker Concert is sponsored by the Laker family in cooperation with the Shaarey Zedek Cultural Commission. Joel and Lauren Bruss are chairman of this year's concert.
