Joint Resolution of the Congregational Rabbis
of Metropolitan Detroit
As a torch is not diminished though it kindles a million candles,
so will he not lose who gives to a good cause.
Talmud
At every turn, it seems, we are called upon to give. Here the symphony, there a hospital. The
aged, the poor, the sick, the disabled. All are important, all deserving of support.
How does a mensch
a good Jew — respond?
—
We would answer that question with a quote from a Jewish. Telegraphic
Agency dispatch of November 1939 -- exactly 50 years ago.
MUKACEVO, Hungary —
Rigorous anti-Jewish measures by the Hungarian government
have reduced the 160,000 Jews in this area to starvation and
beggary...
This correspondent saw fathers and mothers looking with envy upon
their children, who receive a daily glass of milk and a small portion
of bread in kitchens supported by the Joint Distribution
Committee. Some of the children hid their small piece of bread to
share it with their hungry and less fortunate parents...
We are blessed to live in a place and a time when most causes
that call out to us have more to do with enhancing the quality
of life than with providing a small piece of bread to the
starving. What a luxury it is to be able to perform so
many acts of tzedakah in freedom!
And, yet, many of our people still live in hunger — for
Jewish identity, for companionship, for shelter and, yes,
sometimes, for bread. Through the Jewish Welfare
Federation and its partners abroad, like the Joint
Distribution Committee, we help to alleviate that
hunger and to strengthen the network of local agencies
and overseas services that sustain our people.
Therefore, we, the congregational rabbis of Detroit, urge every
mensch in our community — every man, woman and child — to support
the work of the Jewish Welfare Federation by contributing his or her
best gift to the 1990 Allied Jewish Campaign.
