chase of monitors. The fact
that my friends give me
money to give away (some
$725,000 in 15 years) that
eventually winds up saving
lives is a wonder in and of
itself. I am only telling the
story to encourage others to
feel the same as I do when I
get the chance to write a
check for $2,700, knowing it
may very well save a few
babies' lives. Even when I am
having a "bad day," when it
is all diddly work (car needs
repairs, Macintosh refuses to
work right, laundry lies in a
heap undone, plane reserva-
tions screwed up, phone
machine swallows messages),
the day itself is redeemed by
this simple act. The other
things to do are just that —
diddly, insignificant;
necessary but of little mean-
ing in the real world.
Here is an opportunity for
anyone to step outside of the
World of the Diddly, into
someting more gutsy, more
vigorous and invigorating,
something to whet the mitz-
vah appetite for still more
grand and glorious acts.
Everyone is invited. As has
been often said, "All that
needs to be done is to do it."

IDF Releases
Intifada Count

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israel Defense Forces has
published its official casual-
ty list of deaths on both sides
since the intifada began
nearly two years ago.
It reported that 525
Palestinians have been
killed by security forces, 122
of them with plastic bullets.
Among the fatalities were
68 Palestinian children
under 14 years old.
An additional 127 Palesti-
nians were murdered by
fellow Arabs who suspected
them of collaborating with
the authorities, the IDF
said.
On the Israeli side, eight
soldiers and 11 civilians
died.
The IDF reported that
9,221 Palestinians are in
prison. Of that number,
1,716 are being held under
administrative detention,
without trial or any charges
brought against them.
An IDF spokesman said
that security forces have
demolished 244 Arab homes
in the West Bank and Gaza
Strip since the uprising
began on Dec. 9, 1987.
