Roth Anna K. Roth, active in many Jewish organizations, died Nov. 20. She was 88. Mrs. Roth, a resident of Southfield, was born in Austria and has lived in the Detroit area for more than 70 years. She was a member of Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women and was a supporter of the Detroit Sym- phony Orchestra. During the 1930s, she was active with the Home Relief Society. Berger Clara K. Berger, who was active in many Jewish organizaions, died Nov. 21. She was 78. Mrs. Berger was born in Austria and had been a Detroit area resident for more than 69 years. She was a member of the Ladies of the Eastern Star, Knollwood Country Club, Temple Israel and Adat Shalom Synagogue. She was a resident of Southfield. She leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Dwayne X. Riley of Franklin; a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Christine of Tam- pa, Fla.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Salo Baron JTA — Funeral services were held in New York Mon- day for Professor Salo Witt- mayer Baron, the author of a multi-volume history of the Jews, who was acclaimed by many as the greatest Jewish historian of the 20th century. He was 94. Baron, who taught at Col- umbia University from 1930 until his retirement in 1963, died Saturday. Baron was known throughout the academic world for his scholarship and erudition. He spoke 20 languages and could lecture in five. His monumental work, A Social and Religious History of the Jews, began as a lecture series and grew initially into a broad survey of Jewish history, three volumes of which were published in 1937. Eventually, 18 volumes were published. He was work- ing on a 19th at his death. Baron was born in 1895, in Tarnow, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His family, wealthy, educated and of a prestigious rabbinic line, was part of the Jewish aristocracy of Galicia. In April 1961, Baron testified at the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem about anti-Semitism and how the Nazis decimated Euro- pean Jewry. During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrtzeits of the following departed friends, with the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and studying of mi shnayos.
