Grosse Pointe area and it
wasn't too far from the west
side," Janet Weingarten
said. Now she regularly br-
ings her youngest child,
Michael, to pre-school
classes at Emanu-El.
"We wanted a link to the
Jewish community," she
said, adding they are con-
sidering joining a temple on
the west side of town.
Meanwhile, she hopes to
see mounds of enthusiasm
generated with the
Chanukah party. Janet We-
ingarten said there is no

sense of Jewish community
on the far east side. Every-
body who lives there thinks
he or she is the token Jew,.
she said.
"No one knows anyone
else. We want people to feel
they are not alone," she said.
"People can't believe there
are 85 Jewish families. And
there must be more.
"These people want to
meet each other, but no one
has ever tried to get them
together," she said. "I want
the west side people to know
we are out here." ❑

money was donated that the
project could begin.
While waiting for the
playground's completion in
early December, the
children use a small play
area at the old red
schoolhouse in front of the
main building.
In the meantime, both
kindergarten teacher
Frances Fine and first-grade
teacher Sheila Charlip are
turning this construction
project into a learning
lesson.
Sitting on a carpet around
Charlip's rocking chair, her
students look out the
window at the playground
and describe the new wooden
bridge they see,
On a large pad of lined
paper, Charlip writes a few
sentences describing the
latest construction. Student
Daniel Storchan later il-
lustrates the bottom half.
The paper will be placed on a
bulletin board outside the
classroom with the rest of
the class descriptions of the
construction project.
The project is part of the
students' daily lesson as
they read what Charlip has
written. The children have
also learned new words like
"massive" from their daily
descriptions.
The construction has pro-
vided Charlip with many
lesson plans including a unit
on tractors.
Fine's kindergarten class
is also learning new things
from the construction pro-
ject.
Fine and associate teacher
Arlene Hochberger are
teaching their students how
to estimate by asking them
to figure out how many days
the construction will last.
Already a few students
have had to change their
estimates. Jamie Iden
altered her original guess
from four days to 12 days.
She will have to make an-
other guess now that day 13
has passed.

The project even allowed
the class to do a mitzvah by
taking cookies, pretzels,
apples and juice out to the
construction workers.
Hochberger, who has been
at the school since 1970,
never thought she would see
the day when a new play
area would be built.
"Every year we would
pray for it. The area was so
muddy that even on a nice
day in June the children
would have to go out in
boots," Hochberger said.
The children, who each
day go to the window and
watch the construction, can
barely wait for the new play
area.
"Our goal is to be the first
class outside on the
playground," Fine said. ❑

Correction

The waiting list for the
Harriett and Ben Thitel
Apartments was errone-
ously reported as 831
which is the total amount
for all Jewish Federation
Apartments. Since Thitel is
in the initial rental process
there are a limited number
of immediate vacancies.
Helen Naimark, the direc-
tor, does not know the ex-
act number of vacancies.
