Sports Hall Of Fame
Eyes Future Inductees
RICHARD PEARL
Staff Writer
W
ho's going to be
named to the
Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame next
year?
With each passing year,
fewer Michigan Jewish
athletes of the stature of a
Hank Greenberg or a Mike
Yellen become available,
prompting the question at
the fifth annual Hall of Fame
induction dinner Nov. 6. And
not even David Hermelin, the
DC (for Designated Come-
dian) missed the pitch on it.
"I can give you some
names," said Hermelin who,
tongue-in-cheek, proposed
kosher caterer Paul Kohn
("Our greatest Jewish sports
caterer —25 years and never
dropped a pickle") and tele-
vision sportscaster Eli Zaret
("As a Little League
ballplayer, he made 'rookie
of the year' six times").
Hermelin substituted for
comedian Jack Carter, the
scheduled guest speaker who
was a late no-show.
But the question of future
inductees lingered after
Hermelin's one-liners hit the
mark among the 700 persons
who attended the dinner at
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
Nate Pollack, a Hall vice
president, and Jim
Grossman, Hall secretary,
acknowledged a lack of
"name" inductees like the
late, legendary Greenberg.
But both felt there are other
potential candidates such as
five-time national raquet-
ball champion Yellen, who
was inducted that night
along with boxing referee
Lou Handler and basketball
ace Jacob Mazer, both of
whom are deceased.
Grossman said he felt
some of the names likely to
be considered in future years
include Abe Eliowitz, foot-
ball; Dr. Henry "Honey"
Berris, Ralph Goldstein and
Carl Baer, basketball;, David
Linden, squash; Jerry
Schostak and Dave Mondry,
yLchting; Billy Jacobs, ra-
quetsports; and Aaron
Krickstein, tennis.
"We must have 50 names
under consideration," said
Seymour Brode, Hall presi-
dent. "Tonight I had four or
five people come up to me
with names of potential can-
didates. When there are
dinners like this, we've got
them coming out of the
woodwork."
Bill Hertz, chairman of the
Hall's selection committee,
said his group , will meet in
January to discuss nomi-
nees.
, Mike Ilitch, founder of the
Little Caesers pizza chain
and owner of the Detroit Red
Wings hockey team, received
the Al Foon Memorial Award
presented for outstanding
contributions to sports and
athletics in Michigan.
The dinner's silent auction
of 16 items, such as Mario
Lemieux's hockey stick and
an autographed Super Bowl
football, raised $10,000 for
the Hall's Hall of Fame
Games and Maccabi scholar-
ship fund. ❑
