Israeli Tanker
Back At Work
Tel Aviv (JTA) — It was
back to business as usual
last week for the Israeli
tanker Nyuta and its crew,
after three weeks of deten-
tion by Egypt for allegedly
spilling oil in the Gulf of
Suez.
The ship, part of a
government-owned fleet that
shuttles Egyptian oil to
Israel, returned Nov. 10 to
its home port of Eilat and
was off again on a 15-hour
voyage to pick up more
Egyptian crude.
The trial of the tanker's
captain in an Egyptian
maritime court at E-Tur was
postponed until Dec. 5
because the judge said he
needed time to study the
many documents generated
by the investigation.
The Nyuta was arrested by
the Egyptian authorities on
Oct. 21. It was released Nov.
3 on the orders of President
Hosni Mubarak.

Agudah Protests
Holiday Exam
New York (JTA) —
Agudath Israel of California
has joined the chorus of
outraged Jewish communal
voices regarding a Berkeley
sociology professor's
scheduling a midterm exam
on Yom Kippur.
In a letter to Dr. Ira
Heyman, chancellor of the
university, Rabbi Chaim
Schnur, director of Agudath
Israel of California, and
Avery Einhorn, the
organization's 'counsel,
referred to a California state
law passed in 1985, at the
urging of the Orthodox
group, that requires - ,
reasonable accommodation
of a student's religious prac-
tice.
The incident to which they
were referring involved Dr.
Harry Edwards of the Uni-
versity of California at
Berkeley, who scheduled the
midterm for his introductory
sociology course on Yom
Kippur.
When Jewish students in
the class complained, Ed-
wards refused to reschedule
the exam, offering instead
the option of making it up
with a large term paper that
he said would be graded
"hard — harder than the
midterm essays." -
Edwards defended his ac-
tions on the grounds that
Yom Kippur was not on the
university calendar, and
that under the principle of
separation of religion and
state, he was not obligated to
defer to a religious holiday.
