On this verse, the famous commentator Rashi cites the midrash in Bereishis Rabba that three miracles con- sistently occurred during Sarah's lifetime: the candles she lit each Friday night before Shabbat remained for an entire week; there was a "blessing in the dough," that all who ate of Sarah's bread were sated; and a cloud, signi- fying the Divine Presence, was always over her tent. Chaya Sarah Silberberg is rebbetzin, Bais Chabad Torah Center and a teacher at Yeshivat Akiva. A man who is alone lights Shabbat candles; a male maker also must separate challah; and while mikvah is strictly the woman's obligation, she cer- tainly requires her husband's cooperation in observing the laws of family purity. Why, then, are these laws termed "women's mitzvot"? lb answer this, we must first understand how Judaism views the role of the woman. The Talmud states bina Shabbat Chaye Sarah: Genesis 23:1-25:18, Kings 1:1-31. yeseira nitna la'isha, an extra measure of ina, understan- ding, was given to women. Chassidic philosophers ex- plain "understanding" to be the intellectual quality that develops and expands upon the seminal flash of com- prehension that is called SYNAGOGUE SERVICES Bais Chabad of Farmington Hills: 32000 Middlebelt Rd., Farm- 4R When Sarah passed away, these miracles ceased. Now, when Rivka entered into Sarah's tent, these miracles resumed, and Yitzchak knew he had found a fitting suc- cessor to his mother. As the first Jewish woman, and the mother of the entire Jewish nation, Sarah is cer- tainly meant to serve as a role model for all Jewish women. Thus it is surely significant that these three miracles are specifically associated with her. Although women are obligated in the majority of mitzvot (being exempt only from those positive command- ments that have a time con- straint), three are considered distinctly "women's mitzvot": challah, the separation of a piece of dough from the whole and its dedication to God; hadlakat neirot, thel ighting of the Shabbat and holiday taharas candles; and hamishpacha, the laws of mikvah and family purity. Now obviously these mitz- vot are not exclusively in the Bais Chabad of West Bloomfield: 5595 W. Maple Rd., West Bloom- field. Melech Silberberg, rabbi. 855-6170. Beth Jacob-Mogain Abraham: 15751 W.
