A Diary
Of Terror

O

ver

the past 15 years,
Abu Nidal's men
have attacked em-
bassies, airlines, cultural
centers and other installa-
tions and personnel of
"moderate" Arab govern-
ments throughout the world.
Yet, while they lavished
their deadly attention on
such states as Jordan,
Egypt, Saudi Arabia and
Kuwait, their special targets
were those senior PLO fig-
ures who publicly supported
a settlement of the conflict
with Israel that involved
something less than the
total liquidation of the
Jewish state.
In 1978 alone, Abu Nidal's
men assassinated the PLO
representatives in London
(Sa'id Hamami), Kuwait (Ali
Yasin) and Paris (Izz al-Din
Khalak). In 1981, they killed
the PLO representative in
Brussels (Na'im Khadir) and
in 1983, they killed the
PLO's leading ideologue, Dr.
Issam Sartawi.

Abu Nidal's
spectacular
attacks on airlines
and airline
facilities, however,
have been marked
by a special
savagery.

They also attacked Jewish
targets throughout Europe,
including the Agudat Israel
school in Antwerp (1980);
synagogues in Vienna (1982)
—killing two and injuring 19
— Brussels (1982) and Istan-
bul (1986), killing 21 wor-
shippers.
Abu Nidal's spectacular
attacks on airlines and
airline facilities, however,
have been marked by a
special savagery. In 1982,
his men blew up a Gulf Air
passenger liner with 122
people on board; in 1985
they forced an Egypt Air
plane to land in Malta,
where 59 passengers were
killed when Egyptian com-
mandos stormed the plane;
and the following year they
exploded a device on a TWA
plane flying from Rome to
Athens, killing four passen-
gers.
Among the most spec-
tacular airline-related
operations inspired and or-
chestrated by Abu Nidal
were the simultanoous at-
tacks on the El Al airport
counters in Rome and
Vienna on Dec. 27, 1985, in
which 19 people were killed
and some 40 wounded.
