- "Israel," asserts Schiff, "is not going to allow Beirut's problems to arrive at its nor- thern border." Israeli Brigadier General Ze'ev Zachrin, commander of the Israel army's liaison unit which works alongside the SLA in the security zone, told Schiff that the SLA and the zone have improved Israel's security. Eight sabotage efforts were foiled in the zone in recent months, said Zachrin. The dense deployment of troops of the Southern Lebanon Army (SLA) in the zone has allowed Israel to limit the number of its own troops in the zone to a "few hundred" men, according to Schiff. The SLA is trained and financed by Israel, which pays the troops $100 to $140 a month. The fringe benefits are worth even more, accor- r ding to Schiff: Lebanese with family members serving in the SLA can work in Israel for at least a year and earn between $300 and $400 a month. More than 2,000 Lebanese from the security zone are now working in Israel. Survivor Stress Felt By Sons Sons of Holocaust sur- vivors who fought in Israel's 1982 Lebanon War were more susceptible to 'shell shock' and recovered more slowly than other soldiers, according to an article in Psychologia, the journal of the Israel Psychological Association. Holocaust survivors often feel guilty for having sur- vived the genocide, and this stress is passed on to their children. In the army, they may feel overwhelming guilt when caught between seeing comrades die in battle and harboring their own desires to live. Soldiers whose parents survived the Holocaust also feel they are defending the country that ensures the security of their formerly oppressed parents. "They not only have to fight against their present enemies," wrote resear- chers, "but also carry the responsibility of guarding their parents' safe haven."
