emotions gave way to the
politics of the talk of possible
unification, Wiesel feared
what lay ahead.
"I cannot hide the fact that
the Jew in me is troubled,
even worried," wrote Wiesel.
"Whenever Germany was
too powerful, it fell prey to
perilous temptations of
ultra-nationalism."
Wiesel trusts the youth of
today's Germany: "I hope
they will have learned the
lesson of World War II and
will be shielded by that
memory." It is the old
generation that concerns
Wiesel. As long as it is
around, he warned, "one
must be vigilant, on the
alert."
The past, as well as the
future, gnawed at Wiesel.
The mayor of West Berlin
had declared that Nov. 9, the
day East Berlin negated the
Wall, "will enter history."
But, noted Wiesel, that date
was already in the history
books as Kristallnacht, the
night the Nazis rampaged
against the Jews of Ger-
many.
"No one in Berlin, or in
our own country, for that
matter," stated Wiesel,
"made the connection. That
is why I am worried: What
else will be forgotten?"
During an interview on
Israel Defense Forces Radio,
Israeli Prime Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir was much more
circumspect than Wiesel on
Germany.

though there is already talk
about it. Everyone under-
stands that the Jewish peo-
ple has a special attitude on
this issue. After all, greater
Germany, which was very
strong militarily, inflicted
something most grave and
terrible for [sic] the Jewish
people, and this will un-
doubtedly influence Israel's
position when this issue
comes up for discussion on
the international agenda."
Shamir was even more
evasive when pressed by the
IDF Radiointerviewer on
whether Israel should take a
stand on reunification.
"At this moment," he said,
"I don't think Israel has to
discuss this. It has plenty of
its own issues to deal with."

Israel To Keep
8-Mile Zone

Israel will maintain its
eight-mile-wide security
zone in southern Lebanon
"for the foreseeable future,"
according to Israeli jour-
nalist Ze'ev Schiff in an arti-
cle in the B'nai B'rith Inter-
national's Jewish Monthly.
Schiff, the veteran
military correspondent • for
the Israeli newspaper
Ha'aretz, predicts in
"Lebanon: The Untold
Story," that "as long as
there is no government in
Lebanon, as long as there is
no single political address,
as long as different militia
wish to attack Israel, as long
as Shi'ites are trying to ac-
tivate these groups, Israel
will protect itself by all
means, including through
the security zone."
